Anxiety as lecturer slumps, dies in Kogi…barely one month after similar occurrence

Kogi State Polytechnic community in Lokoja has been thrown into deep anxiety over the death of two lecturers, Anslem Ojodomo and Dr. Barnabas Akuba within a spate of one month interval.

The latest, Ojodomo, a lecturer in the institution’s Department of Public Administration was reportedly collapsed while teaching, a development that threw both the staff and students of the institution to mourning.

Late Akuba’s death was said to have occurred a month earlier shortly after the defence of his P.hd thesis, though the circumstances surrounding his own demise were not disclosed.

Confirming the death of Ojodomo in a statement issued on Friday by the Rector, Prof. Salihu Avidime through the Acting Coordinator of the Directorate of Public Relations, John Onimisi, the death was described as sorrowful and the loss a personal shock to the Rector.

The Rector recalled that he had met with the late lecturer only hours before the incident during which they exchanged pleasantries and that Ojodomo appeared to be in good spirits.

Described as a dedicated academic who demonstrated humility, professionalism and a strong commitment to excellence throughout his career, Prof. Avidime said, “the Polytechnic community was mourning the loss of a promising academic and dependable colleague who embodied scholarship, service, and character”.

He further remarked that Ojodomo’s contributions as Deputy Dean, Students’ Services and lecturer left a lasting impact, adding “the deceased also served on several committees within the institution and was regarded as an inspiring figure among colleagues and students”.

Accounts from students, who were there when the lecturer collapsed indicated that Ojodomo collapsed while addressing them during a lecture and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Following the sad occurrence, concern has been heightened within the academic community, with staff and students expressing anxiety over the loss of two lecturers within a short period.

Ojodomo, who joined the institution in 2021, was described as a committed educator who held Master’s degree from Prince Abubakar Audu University and had recently defended his PhD proposal.

The polytechnic community has therefore extended its condolences to his family and the people of Igalamela/Odolu, praying for the repose of his soul.
