The contract is beyond the ministerial approval, and so it requires the Federal Executive Council approval. I know that at the next FEC meeting, it will be presented. It’s not as easy as we thought,” the minister said.

Wike stressed that the FCT Administration deliberately opted for a private-sector management model instead of assigning the responsibility to the transportation secretariat, insisting that professionals with proven competence must run the facilities.

“We said we are not going to allow the transport secretariat to manage it; it will be handled by private individuals who have the competence. So, we believe in the next Federal Executive Council meeting, it will be approved, and once that is approved, we hit the road,” he added.

Project Updates Across the FCT

During the tour, the minister provided updates on several key projects designed to decongest the city and stimulate economic activities.

At the Wuse–Central Business District link road project, being handled by Levante Construction, Wike said work is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed and handed over by June.

He also commended Setraco for the quality of work on the access road to the Mabushi Bus Terminal, noting that the project is slated for inauguration during the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Other inspected projects included the Arterial Road N1 linking Wuye District to Ring Road 2, being executed by Arab Contractors and scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

The minister also visited the 17-kilometre Dei-Dei/Karmo road project, which traverses densely populated communities including Dei-Dei, Gwagwa, Idu, Karmo and Jiwa, eventually linking to the Life Camp axis of Obafemi Awolowo Way. He described the corridor as critical to opening up the FCT and boosting economic activities.

“You can attest to the fact that we have really opened up the Federal Capital Territory. Mr President is doing quite a lot, and I’m so happy we have been given the opportunity to also contribute our own quota. There are so many projects that touch the lives of the people and improve the economic activities of the areas,” Wike said.

Funding and Security Measures

Addressing concerns over funding, the minister revealed that the projects are largely financed through the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), noting that allocations from the Federation Account barely cover salary obligations.

He said the administration’s aggressive revenue drive has ensured steady liquidity to sustain ongoing construction works.

On infrastructure security, Wike disclosed that new measures are being introduced to curb the vandalism of streetlights across the territory. Under contracts awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and CGC, advanced security features and a centralised situation room for real-time monitoring are being integrated into the lighting systems.

According to him, CCECC has nearly completed the installation of streetlights along the airport road, adding that the technology-driven approach will eliminate the need for physical police presence at every pole and make the infrastructure more resilient against criminal activities.

The minister commended contractors for adhering to quality standards and timelines, reiterating the administration’s resolve to deliver impactful projects in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to commencing full operations at the newly constructed bus terminals across the territory, expressing optimism that the Federal Executive Council will soon approve the operational contract.
