A Federal High Court in Abuja has delivered a crushing blow against high-level corruption, sentencing former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to a cumulative 72 years in prison over a \u20a6868.46 million fraud.
Nwabuoku was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a raft of charges bordering on money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and the diversion of public funds. Prosecutors painted a damning picture of systemic looting, alleging that the ex-AGF funneled government money into private accounts through a web of covert transactions designed to mask the trail.
In the course of the trial, the prosecution marshalled compelling documentary evidence \u2014 including bank records, payment vouchers, and expert analysis \u2014 which exposed a calculated scheme executed in phases to outwit detection.
In a decisive ruling, the court found Nwabuoku guilty on multiple counts, imposing prison terms that add up to 72 years. The sentences, however, are to run concurrently.
