For wire fraud and money laundering of $4.1m, a United States (US) court has sentenced a Nigerian national, James Junior Aliyu to 90 months in prison and he would be deported after completing his prison term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, he was also ordered to forfeit $1.2 million and pay $2.4 million in restitution to victims according to a statement by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement explained that the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) with assistance from members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in July, 2022 arrested Aliyu in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa for defrauding dozens of US citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The convict, after his extradition to the US and charged to be part of a cybercrime ring involved in phishing, internet scams and money laundering, he pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the District of Maryland, eight other defendants, who were co-conspirators also pleaded guilty in separate cases related to the same conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aliyu and his co-conspirators, according to the Prosecutors gained unauthorized access to email accounts belonging to individuals and businesses between February and July 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The co-conspirators, who are US residents, were said to have sent false wiring instructions to victims via spoofed emails \u2014 accounts with forged sender addresses \u2014 to deceive them into sending money to bank accounts controlled by the perpetrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
